Music & Architecture
Echoing the exhibitions L’éloquence des murs (The Eloquence of Walls) and Girouette, gargouille & cie (Weathervane, Gargoyle & Co.), presented and organized by the Musée de La Neuveville, this musical program offers a journey through the Baroque repertoire.
Much like the facades of the Bernese Jura—where every detail, ornament, or trace of time tells a story—the works of Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, and Luigi Tomasini reveal a sonic architecture built on balance, contrast, and texture.
Through interwoven melodic lines, structural rhythms, and a play of echoes, this music invites the listener to hear as one observes: by paying close attention to detail, relief, and the memory of forms.
Luigi Tomasini – Trio in B flat major
A court violinist and a key figure of emerging Classicism, Tomasini developed a style of writing grounded in clarity, balance, and transparent lines. His trio reveals an ordered musical architecture where each voice finds its place with absolute precision—much like a building facade designed with mastered proportions.
George Frideric Handel – Trio Sonata No. 4
The quintessential European composer, Handel constructed his music like a structured and expressive discourse. In his trio sonata, motifs circulate and call out to one another, creating a play of echoes comparable to the decorative elements that bring a facade to life.
Henry Purcell – Fantasias
With his Fantasias, Purcell explores a dense and inward-looking contrapuntal style. The melodic lines intersect and overlap, revealing a discreet depth that evokes the silent memory etched into walls and the weathered surfaces of time.
Antonio Vivaldi – Trio Sonata in A major, RV 75
His musical language is built upon movement, contrast, and color. Through the interplay of rhythms and textures, he brings forth a vibrant sonic material, resonating with the diversity of forms and reliefs found within an architectural landscape.
