SUBLIME IDYLLE
Music, Letters and a Love Story
Inspired by the love story of Clara and Robert Schumann, Sublime Idylle offers an intimate journey into the world of one of the most iconic couples of the Romantic era.
The programme brings together music and literature through excerpts from the Schumanns’ correspondence, Jean-Pierre Milovanoff’s short story Clara Plays for Robert (Le cœur seul demeure, Grasset, 2018), and Robert Schumann’s celebrated Advice to Musicians. These texts are interwoven with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms.
Born in 1819, Clara Schumann was one of the greatest pianists of her time and among the first women to pursue an international concert career. An inspired composer, teacher and performer admired throughout Europe, she holds a unique place in music history.
After years of struggle against the opposition of Clara’s father, Clara and Robert Schumann were finally able to marry in 1840. Their union, founded on deep artistic and human understanding, remains one of the most remarkable stories in nineteenth-century cultural life. The letters featured in this programme reveal the intensity of their relationship and their creative dialogue.
Following Robert’s death in 1856, Clara devoted her life to preserving and promoting his musical legacy throughout Europe. Her own compositions, long forgotten, are now experiencing a major revival, revealing the full richness of her creative voice.
At the crossroads of music, literature and personal correspondence, Sublime Idylle invites audiences to discover a story in which love, art and creativity become one.
