ANDREI PUSHKAREV
Vibraphone
Andrei Pushkarev is one of today’s most distinctive vibraphonists and percussionists — a soloist, chamber musician and arranger whose artistry blends classical refinement, jazz imagination and a uniquely personal sound world. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Musikverein, Concertgebouw, the Elbphilharmonie and other major international stages.
Born into a musical family in Kyiv, he developed an early affinity for the vibraphone, winning First Prize at the New Names of Ukraine Competition in 1995 with his own compositions. His international breakthrough followed with the Grammy-winning album After Mozart (Nonesuch), alongside recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, ECM, Gramola and other leading labels.
Biography
Andrei Pushkarev studied at the Kyiv Specialized School of Music and later at the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine with Professor Alexander Blinov, shaping his artistic identity as both an orchestral percussionist and vibraphonist.
At the age of 22, he became the youngest principal timpanist of the Kyiv Philharmonic.
Since 1999, he has served as principal percussionist and a key soloist of Kremerata Baltica, touring and recording worldwide with the ensemble.
He is also an official Artist Representative of Majestic, collaborating with the company in artistic and educational projects.
Pushkarev is especially celebrated for his landmark project “Bach Vibrations”, created in artistic partnership with Gidon Kremer. Inspired by jazz greats such as Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck and Chick Corea, he reimagined Bach’s fifteen two-voice inventions for solo vibraphone — each transformed into a unique jazz-inflected miniature. Premiered at Kremer’s Les Muséiques festival in Basel (2004), the recording on Gramola was singled out by the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik as one of the discoveries of the year. In 2005 he performed the project as a solo recital at the Verbier Festival.
As Gidon Kremer wrote:
“He is more than a good musician — rather a magician… inspiring everything he touches himself.”
He is also an official Artist Representative of Majestic, collaborating with the company in artistic and educational projects.
