ALEXANDRA CASSIRER

dance, performance

Alexandra Cassirer is a self-taught artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans performance, photography, video, and multimedia installations. Her work critically examines the politics of the body, eroticism, and the objectification of women, delving into themes of violence, desire, and identity. Using her own body as a primary medium, she challenges societal taboos and normative structures surrounding power and identity.

Alexandra’s work rejects formal technique in favor of an improvisational approach. Drawing on her experiences with Jan Fabre’s Teaching Group, the Marina Abramović method, Butoh, and Martha Graham technique, her site-specific performances blend physical theatre, experimental dance, and endurance-based practices, fostering a personal connection with the audience and inviting them to confront their own vulnerabilities.

Biography

Growing up in the former USSR with deaf grandparents and immersed in the environment of the deaf theatre, Cassirer weaves the complexity of the Deaf world into her practice. Her exploration of the beauty of gesture is coupled with a poignant examination of the anger, frustration, and oppression experienced by the deaf community.

Through performance, Cassirer creates a dialogue between personal experience and collective empathy, creating works that are visceral, intimate, and profoundly human.
