ALLA KULBABA
Conductor
Alla Kulbaba is one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary musical art of Ukraine, a People’s Artist of Ukraine (2019), and a distinguished conductor. Her creative journey is marked by a deep commitment to the opera and symphony genres, as well as a significant pedagogical contribution.
The foundation of her professionalism was laid at the P.I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, where she obtained two higher education degrees: in choral conducting (1992) and, crucially, opera and symphonic conducting (1995). Her talent was quickly recognized: in 1994, she became a Laureate (III Prize) of the 1st National Competition of Conductors named after S.V. Turchak.
Biografy
Since 1992, Alla Kulbaba’s life has been inextricably linked with the T.G. Shevchenko National Opera of Ukraine. Starting as a prompter, she rapidly climbed the career ladder, becoming Assistant to the Chief Conductor in 1995, and since 1999, a Conductor of the theatre. Her extensive repertoire encompasses more than 30 opera and ballet performances, including masterpieces of world and Ukrainian heritage, such as the operas by Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Puccini, as well as Yaroslav the Wise by H. Maiboroda and Zaporozhets Beyond the Danube by S. Hulak-Artemovsky. She also successfully collaborated with renowned directors such as M. Corradi and I. Nunziata (Italy), along with M. Kuznetsov and G. Kovtun.
Alla Kulbaba regularly performs as the Chief Conductor of numerous concert programs. Her name is also associated with the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, with whom she conducted at significant events, including the New Year’s Concerts on Sofia Square in Kyiv (2018–2020), and prepared programs like “Oh, Fortune!..” and “Viva, Puccini!”. International recognition came through her long-standing collaboration with the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Choir under the direction of R. McMurrin, with whom she toured extensively as a guest principal conductor in the United States (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004), as well as in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan (2008). Furthermore, she collaborates with the Dnipropetrovsk Philharmonic, the Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, East Opera (Kharkiv), and Dnipro Opera. As a guest conductor of the National Opera of Ukraine, she has toured Japan, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Since 1995, Alla Kulbaba has been actively involved in teaching. Since 2001, she has been a faculty member at the P.I. Tchaikovsky NMAU, working at the Department of Opera Training and Musical Direction, and since 2021, at the Department of Opera and Symphony Conducting. Her graduates include a galaxy of talented singers who have built successful careers in Europe and worldwide, such as Andrei Bondarenko and Yurii Samoilov, which testifies to her significant contribution to educating the new generation of opera artists. She is also a jury member for many prestigious vocal competitions.
